John 8:31-34

Jesus said to the people who believed in him,

“You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said.

“We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin."

It should make us feel somewhat better that all the believers of Jesus's time didn't get it either!  When Jesus told them that the truth would set them free, their response was to tell Jesus they were already free.  O boy!  The truth is such an important component of Christianity and the one most ignored by Christians.  Churches are the biggest offenders.  We often do not test our "theories" against Bible truths.  We do so many things, that we have accepted as fact, that really aren't true at all.  They are sins because they are not of God and Jesus.  The rules that denominations make to exclude people are saddening.  This morning, I delivered two precious souls to the Coalition for the Homeless in our area.  We have been feeding them and taking care of them for the last 5 days.  During that time, they arrived at three other local churches who either called the police to have them removed, or slammed a door in their face.  They are not criminals.  They were not asking for money.  They got stuck in Central Florida with no money and no way to live or eat.  Are we really Christians?  They were almost afraid to knock on our door because of the way other Christians had treated them.  When I was hugging them this morning, I was reminded of Christ's words, "What you do to the least of these, you have done to me."  That is the truth.  That is Christ's teachings.  We need to remember the last line of today's Scripture.  Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.  Turning people in need away from any church is simply wrong.  That is the truth and for all of us, "The Truth Will Set Us Free!"
