Proverbs 16:27-29

Scoundrels create trouble; their words are a destructive blaze.

A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.

Violent people mislead their companions, leading them down a harmful path.

In part two of our five-part devotion series dealing with gossip, we are once again back in Proverbs.  This time Solomon has different, but equally alarming, things to say regarding gossip.  We all need to realize and embrace the fact that scoundrels do create trouble.  What is important to discern here is that they do it on purpose.  It is not something that is accidental or occasional.  Notice the three labels for these people that Solomon uses in our Scripture today.  They are scoundrels, troublemakers, and violent people.  We all know people that insist on creating drama that is self-serving.  It makes them the center of attention in such a negative way.  The damage that is done is nothing less than a destructive blaze, separation of best friends,  and misleading of large numbers of well-meaning people.  So, how do we stop these destructive practices from occurring in our own lives?  We fill ourselves with the joy of the Lord and the fruit of the Spirit.  When you are joyful, peaceful, loving, kind, and exhibiting temperance in all areas of your life, scoundrels have trouble creating fires.  Troublemakers will try to plant seeds of destruction, only to find that no one is listening.  Abiding in the Lord means that the Holy Spirit will prohibit us from being misled.  I want everyone to understand that Satan's actions are intentional and deliberant.  He will cheat, lie, and steal to replace God in each of our hearts and remove our joy and peace.  Satan uses people close to us to execute his plan.  While God is working, every minute of every day, to encourage us and lift us up, Satan is tearing down everyone and separating good friends with toxic words.  Why is it so important to talk about this?  When gossip happens, people get hurt.  By being openly joyful daily, we avoid many of the intentional pitfalls the devil plans in our lives.  Joy and peace are Satan's Kryptonite!  These two Godly emotions derail every scoundrel, troublemaker, and violent person.  Use the tools God has given you to fight the dark side as you walk through the valley of the shadow of death.  As Psalm 23 states, we have no reason to fear evil because God's rod and staff will comfort us.  The battle belongs to the Lord and we are His soldiers.  Our battle cry must be, "Silence the Scoundrels, Troublemakers, and Violent People!"
