Genesis 1:26-28

Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us.

They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock,

All the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

So God created human beings in his own image.
    In the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply.

Fill the earth and govern it.

Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky,

And all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

Today, we begin a seven-part series entitled "Who Am I?"  As human beings, we struggle with our identity on this earth.  I want us to go back to the beginning, which is why we are studying Genesis today!  Without a complete understanding of who God intended for us to be, from the beginning, we will get lost in worldly values which will always end in disaster.   As we know, God created everything.  He spent the first five days of creation creating light, darkness, skies, land, seas, vegetation, heavenly bodies and animal life of both the sea and air.  On day six, God created the animal life on earth.  He then closed the day by creating man.  First and foremost, man was not an accident or created by some kind of evolution from the other animals.  Man was an intentional, unique creation by God.  We were all created in His image.  I know we have all heard this, but today I want us to understand and appreciate this statement.  The only thing God created in His image was man, not dolphins, monkeys, palm trees, or spiders!   God explains, through Moses, that man was created to reign over all else on earth.  Yes, God created male and female.  If you are a man, you have a definite identity that was created by God and your primary purpose is to serve God and guide and protect the women and children that God has put in your life.  God told us to be fruitful and multiply.  If you are a woman, you were created by God, from man, with a definite purpose, which is to serve God by helping man and being a fabulous nurturer.  These Biblical revelations are the beginning of knowing who God created us to be.  We have listened to the world's lies so long that we have accepted them as fact.  We were not created equal.  We were created in God's image for God's purpose.  Our individual and family units have all but fallen apart in this earthly world because we have forgotten or denied these facts.  Being a male, I am not supposed to be lost or confused.  I must stay in constant fellowship with God and  lead in a Christian way.  There are many things I am not created to do.  That is why God has put men and women together and not created one or the other, but both.  Remember that God created woman after the discovery that Adam had no helpmate or spiritual companion to execute the life God had given him.  As we explore who we are in God this week, please keep these things in mind.  Being a "helper" does not make anyone subservient or some kind of lesser being.  It makes man and woman alike and different in many ways and obedient!  God created everything, but most precious to Him are man and woman.  If He thinks we are precious, shouldn't we?
