Matthew 7:19-21

So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.

Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter."

As we begin part two of our seven-part devotion entitled, "Actions speak louder than words," we turn to what Jesus has to say about our actions through the apostle Matthew.  When we discover who we are in Christ, we are expected to serve God and His Local New Testament Church.  How serious is God about this fact?  Look at what Jesus says.  He explains that every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and burned.  How do we know which trees are not producing good fruit?  We can tell by looking!  God cannot afford to waste resources on trees and people who do not produce good fruit.  There is only so much fertilizer, water, and good earth to go around in our world.  If Jesus was to spend all His time trying to get people who deny Him to produce good fruit, He would never have time to tend to the trees that are producing the good fruit.  The last part of our Scripture lesson today is key and probably not a very warm and fuzzy statement for us to hear.  Jesus says that not everyone that calls on His name will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  How could this be?  Many people who claim Christ as their personal Savior do not reflect this fact in their lives.  They simply do not produce good fruit.  Jesus says that only those that call on Him, and do the will of God the Father, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  Listen carefully to these words.  Our actions do not get us into heaven.  Only belief in Jesus Christ can do that.  But, it seems that our actions can keep us out of heaven!  We need to spend our precious time  reflecting and praying about producing good fruit.  The next time we begin a sentence with, "Did you hear about what________did..." realize that we are producing rotten fruit or no fruit at all.  Gossiping, slandering, or tearing down someone else is never producing good fruit.  Satan is the person that lies, cheats, and steals from each of us.  If we continue to allow satanic forces to guide our lives, God will cause fire to consume us.  Fire is truly the ultimate cleanser and the only way to make sure that non-productive trees die completely and cause no harm to other healthy trees.  God loves us and lifts us up.  We should do the same thing.  Let's learn a life lesson and put it into practice.  Produce Good Fruit or Prepare to be Firewood!
