Luke 2:27-33

That day the Spirit led him to the Temple.

So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required,

Simeon was there.

He took the child in his arms and praised God, saying,

“Sovereign Lord, now let your servant die in peace, as you have promised.
I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people.
He is a light to reveal God to the nations, and he is the glory of your people Israel!”

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him.

Today we find ourselves back in the temple with Simeon and Anna as Jesus is presented for dedication to God, as Jewish law required.  Remember that Simeon and Anna are just an ordinary couple, trying to be obedient.  The Holy Spirit has fallen upon Simeon and told him to travel to the temple to see the baby Jesus.  Simeon and Anna do just that, arriving prior to Mary and Joseph.  Best of our knowledge, Simeon and Anna have never met Mary and Joseph.  That makes what happens next truly amazing.  The Bible says that Simeon walks right up to Joseph and Mary, and takes the Christ Child in his arms.  Wow, today we would be calling the Department of Children and Families to register a complaint!  Simeon recognized three people that he had never met.  There had to have been other couples in the temple that day with babies.  The temple was a busy place, as it was the center of every believer's life.  The Holy Spirit is truly amazing!  The three disciples that went to the mountain with Jesus had the very same experience.  Remember?  The Bible says that they recognized Moses when he appeared, even though they had never seen him.  Simeon knows exactly what child to hold, and Mary and Joseph allow it to occur.  Were they bad parents who simply did not care who touched this precious baby?  Absolutely not! They felt the presence of God.  What Simeon does next is so important to us as believers in the 21st century.  Our Scripture says that Simeon talks to God.  First thing.  No waiting.  No "passing Go and collecting $200!"  Simeon references the promise God has made with him.  Simeon asks God to now allow him to die in peace.  Simeon doesn't stop there.  Simeon fulfills his part of the promise.  Simeon acknowledges to God that he has seen "God's light," in the form of the baby Jesus, who will be the one who proclaims God to all the people.  Finally, the Bible tells us that Mary and Joseph were amazed at what Simeon had to say.  There's that word again.  I have a question for all of you.  When was the last time you can say that God "amazed" you?  I hope it was this morning!  What we learn from today's Scripture is not to become too "comfortable' with God.  What would have happened if Simeon had simply ignored the Holy Spirit's nudging to go to the temple?  How often do we ignore this same divine nudging?  It was only after Simeon was obedient and went to the temple, that he was able to proclaim that Jesus was indeed Lord.  So, listen to the Holy Spirit today.  Be ready to go where God sends you, and be prepared to be amazed!
