Ephesians 6:13-18

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor

So you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil.

Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.

For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.

In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.

Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion.

Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

In part eight of our twelve-part devotion series entitled, "Be Prepared!" Paul is speaking to the church at Ephesus about preparation.  Then, like now, true Christians were under attack.  As Paul explains, the Ephesians were not fighting "flesh and blood" enemies.  If they were, it would have been much easier.  Many times we don't see our enemies coming as they attack us.  Satan disguises himself and often looks just like us, or even God.  That is why Paul admonishes us to be FULLY prepared.  Notice that we are to cover our entire body in the full Armor of God.  The belt of truth is not enough.  It is completely necessary, but while it may set us free, it doesn't protect the rest of us when fiery arrows come our way.  For that, we need the shield of faith.  As we all know, the head is a vulnerable, and important, part of the body.  We prepare for the ultimate head protection by putting on our helmet of salvation before we go out in the world each day.  Because we are called to go into the world and preach, we must put on our shoes of peace and Good News.  Finally, don't go off into another "battle" before you pray and take your sword of the Holy Spirit with you.  Paul tells us directly that this weapon is none other than the Word of God.  Seems like a lot of work doesn't it?  It is and all completely necessary.  Look at the reward for those of us that prepare completely.  When the battle is over, we will still be standing firm!  Paul doesn't say the battle will be fair.  We can count on the fact that when the devil is involved, nothing will ever be fair.  Paul doesn't say that we won't get wounded along the way.  All of us, that have been in one of God's battles, have the scars to prove it!  Most importantly, Paul does not tell us that, if we are righteous, we will never have to fight.  If you read nothing else that God writes, through me, hear this.  If we are Christians standing for Jesus, we will have to fight.  So, get ready and prepare.  Put on the entire Armor of God.  "All the Pieces are Necessary!"
