!Luke 2:33-34

Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him.

Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother,

“This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, but he will be a joy to many others.

He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him.

In part five of our twelve-part devotion series entitled, "Christmas and the Manger Live Forever!" Luke tells us an important fact that is shared with Mary and Joseph.  Today's Scripture tells us that Mary and Joseph were amazed at the things that were being said about Jesus.  Yes, an angel had visited each of them.  Yes, they were obedient and did exactly as God said.  Yes, they were at the manger and now at the temple.  No, they had no idea the greatness of the manger King that had just been born.  How could they?  None of us truly do, even when we embrace ALL of Jesus!  So the next statement that Simeon makes had to have rocked the entire foundation of this birth.  Mary and Joseph must have gasped in horror.  Simeon shares with these proud parents that their child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall.  Yes, He will bring joy to many others, but He will be opposed by a great multitude.  Not exactly a pleasant eight-day anniversary gift for the Christ child!  What makes this statement so riveting is who delivered it.  Remember, Mary and Joseph had no idea who Simeon was until they arrived at the temple.  The Bible describes Simeon as a devout and just man.  Simeon has taken the child in his arms and thanked God for this great gift.  Mary and Joseph are amazed.  Now they discover that their bundle of joy is going to be opposed by many of the Jews they have met and heard speak.  No parent wants conflict for their children.  Unfortunately, it is unavoidable for many of us and Jesus.  My father always told me that when you take a stand for God, half of the world will oppose you.  No offense to my dad, but I think it is more like three-quarters!  On the eight day in the temple, Mary and Joseph find the true price of obedience to God, that so many of us have discovered.  "Obedience Always Causes Opposition!"
