1 John 2:23-25

Anyone who denies the Son doesn’t have the Father, either.

But anyone who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning.

If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father.

And in this fellowship we enjoy the eternal life he promised us.

Often in the world today, we use words that no longer mean what they did in Biblical times.  Their meaning has been lost, because we have attached worldly meanings to Godly words, so they no longer make sense nor convey the intended Biblical meaning that they once had.  Our Scripture contains one of those words today.  It is a word that I have heard a great deal in recent weeks, used incorrectly.  It is a word that, taken out of context, simply confounds, confuses, and misleads people.  What is this word?  The word is "FELLOWSHIP!"  Do you know that there can be no fellowship without God?  Our Scripture tells us today that this fact is definitely the case.  Notice that John reminds us that we must remain faithful to our teachings.  John refers to them as having "been taught from the beginning."  So you are not confused, these are not cooking instructions or the new "cheats" for your current video game!  These teachings that John speaks about are the fundamentals of life, that the Bible has taught us through the years through Jesus, the prophets, the apostles, and even those spiritual people who have been put in our lives by God.   John tells us if we remember these teachings, we will always be in "FELLOWSHIP" with the Father and the Son.  Here comes the final statement that is so important.  John says that only through this "FELLOWSHIP" do we enjoy the promise of eternal life.  Take just a moment to think about what God is telling us, through John the Apostle.  Can we "FELLOWSHIP" with anyone without God?  Absolutely not.  If you are invited to a gathering, religious or not, by being told that the "FELLOWSHIP" is relational, not Biblical, beware and see my favorite robot flailing and saying, "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!"  There is no such thing as "relational" without God.  Jesus is our example of how we "FELLOWSHIP" and relate to our fellow man.  Without that example being present, our Scripture confirms that we are simply "playing" in Satan's sandbox.  This is not the "FELLOWSHIP" that God and the Bible had in mind.  We all need a sense of community in our lives.  We get to choose that community.  If we choose God and Jesus as our "Community Center," "FELLOWSHIP" will be exactly what the Bible describes.  If we choose Satan's sandbox, we are in for big and unexpected trouble and there will be no genuine, Godly "FELLOWSHIP."  For those of you that have young children and still have outdoor sandboxes, you know why we keep them covered.  The pure white sand, that we originally pour into the sandbox, becomes easily and quickly polluted by adverse weather.  Rain can flood our sandbox and ruin it forever.  Stray cats do not discern that our pure white sandbox is not a litterbox.  They simply do what stray cats do, regardless of the intention that the sandbox is a pure, playful place to be.  The sand in any sandbox gets old and has to be replaced.  If we don't have time to go to the store and get more, our "children" are forced to play in "dirty" sand and will probably contract a disease.  In God's "Community Center," renewal is constant.  There is a reason why we call Jesus the "Living Water."  "FELLOWSHIP" with each other, with God and Jesus at the center, constantly renews, replenishes, and revitalizes.  "Stray cats" are welcomed and instructed in the ways of the "Community Center."  What used to be wild and lascivious behavior, becomes "FELLOWSHIP" with God and their fellow "cats."  So, be careful today when you are invited to a "Community" for "FELLOWSHIP."  Ask if God and Jesus are leading the party. Make sure you are not about to attend Mardi Gras where collecting "beads" is the primary "FELLOWSHIP!"   Please decline to play in Satan's sandbox and wait for a true sense of "Community" and "FELLOWSHIP."  Anything else is simply building your "Community" on sinking sands!
