Luke 10:26-28

Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”

The man answered,

“‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart,

All your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’

And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”

In part seventeen of our eighteen-part devotion series entitled, "Sharing God's Love!" we listen to Jesus as He questions and answers this man that Luke tells us all about.  The first thing Jesus does is He refers to the "law of Moses."  Jesus was constantly referencing the Old Testament to let people know that Jewish law was something He knew and respected.  Often modern-day Christians discount the Old Testament as not being as important because it came before Jesus.  We could not make a bigger error if we share in this belief.  Obviously, there are things in the Old Testament that were replaced by the good news of Jesus in the New Testament.  An example of this is Jesus explaining that circumcision was no longer necessary as a covenant in the New Testament.  What was now necessary was for everyone to believe in God's Son.  Notice that the man gives the right answer because he knows the law.  He was prepared to answer Jesus's question.  Are we?  Do we know the Bible in such a way as to be able to respond when Jesus and the Holy Spirit speak to us?  If we have not added weekly Bible study to our "Outlook Calendar," in addition to daily prayer, fellowship and worship, we are not following all of God's instructions.  We are to know the Bible so it can guide and defend us in all of life's situations.  The last part of this Scripture is so important to all of us.  Because the man was prepared with the right answer, Jesus is able to reward him with accolades.  Jesus tells the man that he is right and if he continues this agape love, he will live!  Can we imagine hearing that from Jesus?  Our hearts would jump for joy.  So, be comforted today in your knowledge of the law and God's love.  Listen carefully for God's accolades in our lives.  "Do This and We Will Live!"
