Hebrews 4:14-16

So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God,

Let us hold firmly to what we believe.

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses,

For he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.

There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

I take great comfort in the fact that Christ was half-human.  I will forever be grateful to God for the way He brought His Son into the world.  When you think about it, there are many other ways God could have introduced us to Jesus.  The Bible tells us that when Christ returns a second time, it will be on a cloud and loud!  It could have been that way the first time.  Jesus could have come as a divine, adult being, never experiencing what our Scripture talks about today.  I don't know about you, but I think about that a lot.  When Jesus was done with His 18 hour day and sat down, what was He thinking?  You know His legs hurt and His feet ached.  Yet, the Bible tells us He wasn't cranky.  Jesus didn't complain about His day or the thankless work He was doing in the midst of His enemies.  Like many ministers, His "Spiritual doorbell" never stopped ringing.  Think about the people He hung out with every day.  For 3 1/2 years, He walked and talked every day with Judas.  In the end, most of the disciples deserted Him.  These were His best earthly friends.  When the writer of Hebrews says that Jesus, as our High Priest, understands our weaknesses, we can take that statement to the bank!  If you want great consolation for each day's life journey, wake up knowing that Jesus did and experienced everything you will see and do before you arrive back  home.   He "walked a mile in your sandals."  Your High Priest sits at the right hand of God, having been where you have been.  You can not look at Jesus and say, "You just don't understand!"  Our Scripture tells us to go boldly to this Holy Throne with this very experienced High Priest.  Why?  This Holy Throne is where we will receive God's mercy through His Son, Jesus Christ.  Only by "holding fast to what we believe" can we experience God's grace, when we need it most.  The next time you are inclined to complain about your life, look to the cross.  While we may have some trials in our life, I don't believe any of us will be physically crucified today.  While a co-worker may be annoying, no one is going to ask you to carry a huge wooden cross down Main Street and beat you, in public, before you hang on it.  We might often feel betrayed by our best friends, but none of them are going to condemn us to death today for 30 pieces of silver.  Stand firm in your belief of our empathetic High Priest.  Take all your burdens and concerns to God's Throne Room and lay them at the feet of Jesus.  Rest assured, unlike anyone else in your life today, He will understand!
