1 Corinthians 3:10-12

Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder.

Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have, Jesus Christ.

Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials,

Gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value.

But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done.

The fire will show if a person’s work has any value.

God has led me to a very important Scripture lesson today.  We are so often like the church at Corinth that Paul speaks about today.  The church at Corinth always looked busy.  They were always doing something.  The problem was that the Corinthians were living in a house divided.  Different people in the church had varying opinions and suggestions about how the church at Corinth should work.  Imagine that!  Many of us probably experienced those problems in our church this past week!  If you listen to most church members and clergy, you will get a response I simply don't accept, and neither did the apostle Paul.  The response is often, "Well, that happens in every church."  The problem with this response is that it SHOULDN'T happen in every church!  If we, as God's people and ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ allow this to occur, Paul tells us what will happen.  So, today I will be "Captain Obvious" in order to make sure that we all understand what Paul is saying.  The only foundation for our lives or any church is Jesus.  Nothing else.  Not ritual or fanfare.  Not pomp and circumstance.  Not meetings, media, or money.  The church is not a place to "hangout" because we have nowhere else to go or feel like our "membership card" requires occasional attendance.  You will never read in the Bible that Jesus was "hanging out" anywhere.  Jesus was always preaching, praying, or teaching.  Jesus always had a purpose that was intentional.  Jesus always gave 100% and expected the best from Himself and others around Him.  Jesus did not ask Zaccheus to come out of the tree so He could have a free meal and hangout.  Jesus did not go to Zaccheus' house so he could get some inside information on how to get people to give more money to the ministry!  Jesus simply wanted to preach and teach about God.  After Jesus ministered to him, Zaccheus did the rest.  The preaching, teaching, and discipleship solved Zaccheus' money and spiritual problems and no church council or congregational meeting was needed and no one got hurt!  Everything that churches fear most, not enough money, not enough people, not enough stuff, is solved spiritually, after we build the foundation of our church and our lives on Jesus Christ.   Paul warns the Corinthians and us about "incorrect building."  The warning is pretty severe.  Paul says that anyone who builds on the foundation of the church with anything but Jesus, will have their work tested by fire on judgment day.  We all need to listen to Paul's warning and take heed.  Paul tells us that we are literally "playing with fire."  We all know that if we continue to play with fire, we will get burned.  The critical point that we don't see, individually or corporately as churches, is how many people get hurt when we don't listen to Paul and Jesus.  Gold and silver don't work for everyone and fire will liquefy both.  Some people are allergic to hay and straw.  Termites love wood and systematically destroy it from the inside out, rarely being seen until it is too late.  Expensive jewels are of no use to anyone but for show, and the fake ones simply give an illusion of something that is not real and often turn your fingers, wrists, and ankles green.  That's why we must choose Jesus.  Jesus is the real deal and works for everyone.  That's why God sent Him to earth!  Please build your life on the solid ground of Jesus Christ.  Everything else is "sinking sand" and we probably won't know we are sinking until it is too late!
