Luke 2:39-40

When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord,

They returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.

There the child grew up healthy and strong.

He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

In part seven of our twelve-part devotion series entitled, "Christ and the Manager Live Forever!" Luke shares the next step taken by our new "Holy" family.  Notice that Mary and Joseph had been completely obedient to the requirements of the law of the Lord.  They had presented Jesus at the temple at precisely the right time and dedicated His life to God.  While this may seem a little strange to us modern-day Christians, it truly was an act of obedience.  Because Jesus was fully man and fully God, this was an event that absolutely had to occur.  Jesus had to be dedicated and committed to God in compliance with God's law, in addition to Jewish law.  As we will learn in the next few days, Herod is sending the wise men out to find Jesus.  According to Old Testament prophecy, they will be looking for Jesus in Bethlehem.  Jesus, thanks to the obedience of Mary and Joseph, is in Jerusalem, literally under Herod's very nose!  Because Herod has no idea about Christian obedience, he never looks for Him at the temple.  Notice that Mary and Joseph depart to their home of Nazareth, rather than returning to Bethlehem.  This fact becomes instrumental in the safety of Jesus.  Finally, Scripture tells us that Jesus grows up healthy and strong.  God's favor is upon Him.  While Herod is looking to kill Christ, God is protecting Him.  As we begin 2014, let's pray specifically for one thing that will change everything we do in this new year.  "Make Us Obedient to Restore Order and Protection!"
