Matthew 2:3-4

King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.

He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked,

“Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”

In part nine of our twelve-part devotion series entitled, "Christmas and the Manger Live Forever!" Matthew explains how Herod reacts to the news about the birth of Jesus.  Remember the wise men had come from eastern lands and asked where they could find the Christ child.  Herod reacts by being deeply disturbed.  After all, Herod is not going to tolerate the appearance of another "king" in his kingdom.  The disturbing part of this Scripture is the next part that Matthew shares with all of us.  Everyone in Jerusalem was also deeply disturbed.  So Jerusalem was not delighted about the birth of the "King of the Jews?"  Isn't this what they had been waiting for as proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah?  They should have been running up and down the streets of Jerusalem doing cartwheels!  Unfortunately, this was not the case.  You see, the Jewish people lived in fear.  Herod had done a great job of constantly threatening and causing turmoil.  One method of "control" is instilling fear and chaos in people.  Herod did it.  Satan does it.  Unfortunately, some churches do it!  Fear, anger, hate, jealousy, and envy are all emotions that negate love.  God had sent His only Son into the world as a gift from above to all of us.  Jesus was sent to redeem the world.  The Jewish people were so confused and confounded they couldn't see the forest for the trees!  Confusion often comes from the leader and Herod was no exception.  Notice that Herod was not well-aquainted with the Law and the Prophets.  He had to call the chief priests and teachers together to determine where the Messiah was to be born.  He had no idea.  As we continue celebrating Christmas and the manger all year long, let's learn a very important fact from Herod and the Jewish people of the time.  "Ignorance is NOT Bliss!"
