Matthew 2:9-11

After this interview the wise men went their way.

And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem.

It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was.

When they saw the star, they were filled with joy!

They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary,

And they bowed down and worshiped him.

Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

In part eleven of our twelve-part devotion series entitled, "Christmas and the Manger Live Forever!" Matthew shares the account of the wise men's arrival in Bethlehem.  After Herod grilled them about where he might find this Christ Child, the wise men departed for Bethlehem.  The star guided them and stopped exactly where Jesus was.  By the way, it did not stop at the manger.  Jesus was no longer there.  Jesus began His life in a manger, transitioned to a "rented" house, and died and was buried in a borrowed tomb.  At no time in His life did He own anything!  There is a message there for all of us, especially to those of us who claim to be "Levites!"  In the Old Testament, God made it clear that pastors should own nothing, but be taken care of in their everyday needs.  Jesus, being the living example of God in the New Testament, never owned anything nor counted any possessions.  In both cases, everything belonged to their ministries.  I challenge all pastors to look at this aspect of ministry carefully.  While no one can, or should, judge anyone else's motives, this Biblical principal of Levites owning nothing certainly clears up our true reasons for doing things!  When the wise men arrive, they present the best gifts they had to offer to Jesus.  Two things can be learned here.  First, they prepared and brought the best gifts with them on this journey.  That means they already believed in the Messiah before they arrived.  Secondly, they didn't change their minds and keep any of the gifts for themselves.  They gave all they had to Jesus.  We should learn the very same lesson.  Our lives, in this world, would be much more profitable and productive if we simply would remember what the wise men demonstrated.  "Everything We Have Belongs to God!"
