2 Peter 3:17-18

I am warning you ahead of time, dear friends.

Be on guard so that you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people

And lose your own secure footing.

Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

All glory to him, both now and forever! Amen.

Today we begin a ten-part devotion series entitled, "Whither or Grow...Our Choice!"  Peter is speaking his final words to Israel.  The legalists are hard at work preaching to the Jewish people about the Jewish laws, many of which now conflict with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The new "Jesus Movement" is hurting both the power and the income of the chief priests.  These church officials are attempting to control the ground-swell that they view as a major threat to their way of life.  Peter continues to admonish the Jewish people about growing in Christ, not in other ways.  What does that mean?  If we grow in the knowledge and grace of God and Jesus, we flourish and become extremely productive for God, being filled with the Holy Spirit.  The joy of the Lord changes our entire life and all perspectives we have of what is important and what is not.  We literally begin to live for Jesus and He and God just keep heaping blessings on us daily.  The struggle we have is with Satan, and God can help us conquer that each day.  The alternative, as Peter points out, is to "grow" in the world, never finding our purpose or true peace and satisfaction.  We turn to the pleasures of the world as a poor substitute for God's joy and peace.  The world tells us we have "grown."  Look at your house, your car, your bank account, your job, your luxury vacations, and everything you have accumulated!  We literally learn to "worship" all these things and often we walk away from true worship, proclaiming that we have no time for it.  In this way, we don't "grow," we whither.   Take heed and listen to Peter.  We will all "grow" in one of these two ways.  "Which One Will Be Your Choice?"
