James 1:19-21

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters:

You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts,

For it has the power to save your souls.

One of the areas of my life that has caused me a great deal of struggle over the years has been anger.  I say "has been" because God has worked with me over the last few years to understand how to eliminate anger from my soul.  James and I would like to help you with this area of your life today.  God fills those of us that are Christians with wonderful spiritual gifts and develops the "Fruit of the Spirit" within us.  Anger destroys all of these gifts and causes the "Fruit of the Spirit" to wither on the vine.  When God began to deal with the anger inside me, the first thing He did was make me understand why I was angry.  I discovered that there are three emotions in play as it applies to anger.  All of them are equally dangerous and must be identified, if we are to remove the anger that we harbor inside of us.  These emotions are jealousy, envy, and fear.  Some of the most dangerous events in our life have been born out of these three emotions.  Our understanding of spiritual gifts will fix all of these emotions.  Let me demonstrate.  All fear is eliminated by faith.  If we believe that God will provide for our needs and He is in control, all we need to do is be obedient.  God takes care of the rest.  Fear is Satan's way of negating faith.  Jealousy and envy are both stopped in their tracks by the "Fruit of the Spirit."   Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control leave no room for envy and jealousy.  If we covet someone else's talent, possessions, or status, it removes our joy and peace immediately, leaving us with bitterness and anger.  These are all the reasons that I needed to work on any anger that I was harboring and instead live in the Spirit as fully as God would like.  James says it much better than I ever could.  James tells us that anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.  He then instructs us to remove all the filth and evil in our lives so that we can be what God created us to be.  I need to remind all of us what God reminded me during His "Anger Management" training in my life.  Covering up anger does not work.  We must eliminate it, or it will come out, usually when we least expect it.  We never know what the "trigger" will be, but when it happens, it won't be pretty.  Most often this anger then prompts us to do or say hurtful things that we can't take back.  As I have mentioned in previous devotions, there is a reason why we refer to anger as "blind rage."  Anger blocks everything and only allows us to see Satan, not God.  Listen to James today.  Evaluate your life and let God reveal the sources of anger in your life.  Give them to God and let Him deal with them.  He is much better at it than we are!  In today's world, we are always striving to remove harmful things from our lives.  We want to be Gluten-free and MSG-free,  Neither of these is as harmful to our bodies as anger.  Today, let's be Anger-free!!!
