1 Peter 2:8-10

And,“He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.”

They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people.

You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession.

As a result, you can show others the goodness of God,

For he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

“Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people.
Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”

This is part two of our five-part devotion series entitled "One Nation Under God."  Peter is speaking to all persecuted Christians and trying to encourage them, particularly when times are tough.  Peter says that we stumble and fall when we do not obey God's word.  No wonder the United States is in such peril.  As a country, we often deny God's word.  We are allowed to believe in the Ten Commandments, but not post them in public.  In most government offices, we can read the Bible on our own, but not mention it to our co-workers.  Peter tells us that if we reject this kind of ungodly behavior, we are royal priests of a Holy nation and God's own possession.  I am often offended at politicians of all parties in this country who never speak of God except to close their speeches.  One thing I know for sure is that God will not bless America if we deny Him.  Delivering a political message that does not recognize God as Omnipotent from the beginning, will ensure that God's blessings will not be on us as a nation.  Denying God's laws and truths in order to be politically correct will result in God ignoring our petitions that are obviously not in His name.  That is what Peter means when he tells us that God called us out of the darkness into His light.  Our identity is nothing without God and His Son Jesus Christ.  This is what makes us God's people and allows us to receive His mercy and grace.  As we fall to our knees on this 4th of July, let's truly celebrate our independence from everyone except God.  Let's embrace our forefathers who loved God and their new nation.  Let us turn our eyes to Jesus and ask for His blessing on our nation.  Let's not expect blessings when we stand and deny God.  But, if we do everything in God's name can we really proclaim, "Happy Independence Day!"
