Genesis 46:2-3

During the night God spoke to him in a vision. “Jacob! Jacob!” he called.

“Here I am,” Jacob replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,” the voice said.

“Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation.

In part three of our five-part devotion series entitled "One Nation Under God," we discover that God has claimed our "nation" from the beginning.  Moses writes to us about God speaking to Jacob.  The first two lines of this Scripture are so important.  First, God calls Jacob by name and speaks to him personally.  Second, Jacob answers!  This might not seem to be a big deal to us, but it is to God.  I must confess that there have been several times in my life when God has called my name but I did not answer.  God must have been really disappointed.  God speaks to all of us and calls us by name.  As New Testament Christians, He most often speaks through the Holy Spirit and Jesus.  We need to be listening for our name and respond quickly as Jacob did.  Notice what the first thing was that God shared with Jacob in their conversation.  God identified Himself and told Jacob who He was, and related it directly to Jacob's father.  As I have mentioned before, family is important.  I have been fortunate in my life to have a father who embraced God.  My Dad passed that onto me.  In raising my own children, I am answering when God speaks my name and letting them know that God is in my life and theirs.  Finally, God tells Jacob to not be afraid to go to Egypt.  The concluding statement must be embraced by all Christians and Americans.  God will make our "family" into a great nation.  Through Christ, we are all related to God and each other.   God was not just referring to Jacob's nuclear family.  God was referring to what I call the "Family of God."  We simply cannot become a great nation without God.  If we examine the problems we have in the United States today, we will discover that God can solve each of them.  Don't smack me around, but most poverty can be solved by God, through His hands and feet.  It was our God-less government that created the current mess.  The Bible says that the local New Testament Church is supposed to help widows, orphans, and those that cannot provide for themselves or their families.  That would require everyone to be a member of a local New Testament Church!  That is how we would take care of each other and, between our employer and our own wages, we would have 15.3% of our income to handle these tasks!   Instead, we created Social Security as a non-Biblical alternative to solve this problem.  The best that can be said about our Social Security system today is that it is a complete mess that, at some point, is destined to fail.  Furthermore, the government knows it is wrong, which is why the only occupation that can opt-out of Social Security is ordained ministers!  Let's answer when God calls, like Jacob did.  Let's "Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb," and serve Him first and foremost.  It is never too late to let God make our "family" a great nation.   Let's look at God and say "Here I am!"
