Romans 8:2-4

And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit

Has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.

The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature.

So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have.

And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us,

Who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Paul knew a lot about our sinful nature.  Remember that Paul was the man that had the distinction of murdering more Christians, one at a time, than anyone in Biblical history.  Paul was effectively a "hired gun" when it came to "taking out" influential Christians that the Roman government simply didn't want to have around.  If not for the Scripture prophecy about how Jesus would die, Paul would have probably been His murderer too!   The Damascus Road experience changed Paul for good (both meanings!), along with being present for Stephen's stoning and testimony.  Can people change?  Of course they can.  So what's the problem?  Paul tells us in our Scripture for today.  We have no control over our actions without Jesus.  Whether or not we want to admit our sinful nature is immaterial.  It is there.  Always has been and always will.  God knew and sent His only Son to earth in human form.  Jesus showed us how to combat our sinful nature.  As Jesus ascended, God sent the Holy Spirit to indwell us and battle our sinful nature to our mortal death.  Yes, it is a life-long struggle, not just a day, week, month, or year.  Here is the really bad news for Christians living in a world that is run by Satan and his followers.  The more we listen to the Holy Spirit, the worse the turmoil in our earthly life becomes.  Not only do we have to fight this battle side-by-side with Jesus everyday, our obedience forces Satan to declare war on us, individually and corporately, as God's children.   Tests, trials, and tribulations are a big part of our service to God Almighty.  As we battle the dark side, we learn and grown as Christ's disciples.  We literally become changed just like Paul.  Our sinful nature is replaced with spiritual gifts, God's fruit of the Spirit, and our agape love for each other.  In this way, we literally defeat Satan everyday.  You know me, there is always a Biblical warning in our Scripture that we must heed!  Stay away from Satanic influences.  Don't entertain them.  Don't rub shoulders with them.  Don't think you are more powerful than Satan.  You are not.  The only person that can defeat the darkness is Jesus, the Light of the World.  Stay close to Him.  When we commune with negative, argumentative, judgmental, selfish, angry, jealous, or envious people, we are asking for trouble.  Remember Adam and Eve and the serpent?  That's what can happen to all of us.  Instead, let's be Daniel in the lion's den and live in the Spirit.  We ask the question again...Can people change?  Of course, but it is not an attitude change that is needed.  We all need a "Spirit Transplant!"
