Mark 14:37-40

Then he returned and found the disciples asleep.

He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.

For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as before.

When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldn’t keep their eyes open.

And they didn’t know what to say.

God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ask so very little of us.  The Triune God is never demanding.  Jesus never whined.  God doesn't pout.  The Holy Spirit never insists.  That's why this passage of Scripture is so important.  Jesus actually asks the disciples to do something.  The suggestion is not life-threatening.  It is not strenuous.  Jesus simply asks the disciples to stay awake and pray.  Jesus knew what was coming that night.  In the same way, He knows exactly how we are tempted each day.  Jesus makes one of the most important points in His ministry that we should listen to intently.  Temptation and trouble can only be defeated by prayer.  Jesus knew, so He went to pray.  Jesus knew how important the decision was that He needed to make and He needed to talk to God the Father.  What did the disciples do?  They went to sleep.  Not one of them stayed awake.  Before we judge the disciples and shake our heads in disbelief, have we ever not listened to Jesus?   Has He ever told us to "stay awake and pray" with Him?  When Jesus returns from prayer, He finds all the disciples sound asleep.  Jesus wakes up Peter and basically asks him what in the world he is doing!  Jesus takes time to once again explain why Peter needs to stay awake.  Christ wants Peter, and all the disciples, to not give into temptation.  So Jesus seeks God's face again, through prayer, and the disciples go back to sleep!  Like all of us, when Jesus returned for the second time, the disciples had no answers.  When we openly disobey God and He asks why, we never have a good retort.  Usually we have some lame excuse.  The disciples told Jesus they were so tired and couldn't keep their eyes open.  Attention all one was more tired than Jesus!  Remember, the Triune God is never demanding on us.  Listen to the Holy Spirit as God and Jesus tell us what we need to know to protect us from Satan and the world.  It really is this simple.  Stay Awake and Pray!
