2 Corinthians 12:19-20

Perhaps you think we’re saying these things just to defend ourselves.

No, we tell you this as Christ’s servants, and with God as our witness.

Everything we do, dear friends, is to strengthen you.

For I am afraid that when I come I won’t like what I find, and you won’t like my response.

I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness,

Slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.

As we close our five-part devotion series on slander and gossip today, we return to the apostle Paul and his wisdom to the church at Corinth.  Paul has already planted churches in Corinth and they are operating.  Unfortunately, not in a Godly way.  Paul has to remind the Corinthians of all of Christ's teachings.  Paul is a living example of what the Corinthians should be doing and reminds them of this fact.  I often experience the same problem with people in my family of God when I address our weaknesses without Christ Jesus.  We are supposed to strengthen each other, not tear each other down.  Look at the list of vile emotions that Paul identifies.  Quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior can all destroy anyone at any time.  This is why God says that we should not do ANY of them.  Paul is sharing with the Corinthians what they don't want to hear, but need to fully understand.  We cannot be in fellowship with God when we consistently exhibit any of these destructive behaviors.  Doing even one of these is a recipe for disaster in God's Kingdom.  Notice that Paul states that when he arrives in Corinth, he is afraid he will find these things.  Heed Paul's warning.  We can't claim the name of Jesus if we consistently and persistently sin in these areas, especially as we participate in gossip and slander.  In our prayer time today, let's ask God to reveal the truth to us in these areas.  There is no waffling or fence-sitting here.  God is saying loud and clear, if you are to be my child, "Stop All of These Now!"
