Matthew 10:12-15

When you enter the home, give it your blessing.

If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.

If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message,

Shake its dust from your feet as you leave.

I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off

Than such a town on the judgment day.

We conclude our three-part devotion today centered on the mission statement that Jesus shares with the apostles.  As Matthew continues quoting Jesus, he shares with us that when we find a worthy house, we should salute it.  In other words, greet them with God's peace, joy, and love.  In a worthy house, we should share all of God's peace.  Now for the warning from Jesus.  If the house is not worthy, leave it and keep your peace.  Why? Your peace will do no good.  Since our peace is God's, we should be aware of what I call "Joy-suckers."  These are the Eeyore's of the world that will never stop complaining and gossiping.  Life is always awful and no amount of God's peace will turn their heads.  What will be sure to happen to us if we hang around these "joy-suckers," is that we will become like them, and lose our peace with God.  Jesus goes on to say that people who ignore the Word of God as we preach it, should be treated as dust and shaken from our shoes.  To many of us, that may seem harsh.  What it really is can be defined as God's truth in love.  We waste so much time on people that hear the Word of God, but intentionally reject it.  God says that He will honor anyone's request to be separated from Him.  It breaks His heart, but each of us has free will.  I am sure how important this fact is by reading the last verse of our Scripture lesson today.  Sodom and Gomorrha was one of the greatest tragedies in Biblical history.  Not one Godly person could be found outside of Lot.  Both towns were eliminated and nothing was left.  Even Lot's wife was not faithful to God or Lot.  Our Scripture says that Sodom and Gomorrha would be better off than the people Jesus refers to in our Scripture lesson.  Wow, what a statement.  So, what do we do today?  Preach God's message accurately.  Use all of the tools Jesus gave us to win the lost and disciple them in Christ.  Look for worthy people and share God's peace with them.  Stay with these worthy and Godly people as long as you can.  Finally, when you encounter those that consistently deny God, depart quickly.  As you go away from them, remember to "Shake the Dust From Your Feet!"
