Malachi 4:5-6

“Look, I am sending you the prophet Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord arrives.

His preaching will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers.

Otherwise I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Yesterday was the day our world designates as Father's Day.  Many of us were in church serving God.  On Mother's Day, we often hear sermons directed to our mothers.  Unfortunately, we rarely hear Father's Day sermons.  If we do hear them, they are usually negative in nature, focusing on "male sins" that plague us in raising our families.  Both men and women have their own unique satanic influences that tempt them.  I believe all of us understand that on some level.  Malachi helps us with what we should all glean on Father's Day.  Fathers need to turn their hearts to their children and then children will turn their hearts to their fathers.  Dads, notice the order!  If we don't do that, our experience here on earth with be cursed, and fathers and their children may never understand God and love well enough to experience eternal life in Jesus.  In other words, heaven may be emptier than it should be.  Being both a father and a grandfather, my heart becomes burdened about this often.  I was fortunate to grow up in a home with a Godly father.  My Dad encouraged me and worked in concert with my mother to provide the right balance of encouragement and discipline.  Both are extremely important and necessary.  Today, with well over 50% of our marriages ending in divorce and the challenges of blended families, being a Godly man has never been more important.  Like God our Father, we as men may find ourselves being a father to many.  Of course we need to take care of our biological children, but most likely, if we are part of a Family of God, we will also "adopt" other children who need "fathering."  That is why this devotion is for EVERY MAN.  Let me encourage all the men that are reading this to be the man GOD created you to be.  Don't give into the world's description of a "real man."  Real men read their Bible, alone and with their children.  Real men love all children.  Real men praise God daily, pray and weep.  Real men say, "I love you" to their children. Ladies, we need your help.  God created all of the wonderful women in our lives to be our "helpmates."  That does not mean you are "lesser" in some way.  Actually, it fulfills God's perfect plan for all of us.  Encourage the men in your lives.  When you see something that seems to not be Godly, sit down and talk about it to the men in your lives, not chastising, but being genuinely concerned and helpful.  Most of all, support them, love them, and cherish them.  As we reflect on Father's day, let's stop talking about all our sin for a moment, and focus on being "real men" for our children.  God and Jesus were both encouragers, not discouragers.  As we strive to be "real men" and follow the Triune God, let's not provoke the children and women in our lives to wrath.  Hug your children today.  They need it and so do we.  They were created to be our legacy in God.  Before we say anything to them, please consider that fact.  Finally, even though this popular phrase has been greatly over-used, it is very true and as men it should be our mission statement.  Always remember, "Real Men Love Jesus!"
