Matthew 10:8-11

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons.

Give as freely as you have received!

“Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins.

Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick.

Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.

“Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.

We continue today with part two of our three-part devotion exploring Jesus's mission statement to the twelve apostles.  It is so important that we listen carefully to what God has to say, so that the gospel message is not misunderstood.  Today we discover that Jesus basically gave the disciples all of the power He had, in order to execute the ministry.  Jesus tells the apostles to go heal the sick, cure leprosy, and cast out demons.  Wow, could they do all that?  Of course they could, and did.  So can we.  Today, "raising from the dead," is somewhat common place because of modern medicine.  In all but some very small third-world countries, leprosy is a mute issue.  Healing the sick is done both by medical professionals and gifted Christian healers.  Notice that money is not the issue in God's message.  Neither is daily provision.  One of the most difficult Christian concepts for all of us to embrace is the idea of accepting other Christians' hospitality.  Matthew helps clear up this issue by reminding us that if we work, we deserve to be fed.  What a comforting statement to anyone that is in active gospel ministry.  It is okay to search for worthy people where you can "stay."  Does this mean to go seek out the wealthiest individuals you can find and "wine and dine them?"  No it does not, and unfortunately some churches do exactly that.  Do we believe that God will provide for all our needs?  If we do, then we simply need to preach the gospel message and remind everyone that God is worthy of our praise.  Our ministry exemplifies this daily.  We never know where the next dollar is coming from, and we don't worry about it.  Today, follow God's message and heal people, raise the dead, and cast out demons in His name, all according to our gifts in Christ Jesus.  Give freely, and don't carry around money to do the ministry!   Seek out those that are worthy and accept their hospitality.  Let's feed each other daily!
