Luke 3:15-17

Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon,

And they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah.

John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water;

But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—

So much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

 He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork.

Then he will clean up the threshing area,

Gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”

In part one of our six-part devotion series entitled, "Cleansing or Consuming Fire?" Luke shares both kinds of fire with us.  Remember, it had been four hundred years since the Jewish people had heard from God.  They were anxious for the Messiah to arrive and free them from Roman tyranny.  When John the Baptist showed up, many thought and wished that he was the Messiah.  He quickly straightened out this confusion.  John the Baptist explained that Jesus would baptize with fire, not water.  What does that even mean?  It was simple.  Jesus would cleanse us with the fire of the Holy Spirit, which had not yet manifested itself in the world.  Christ's fire would purify our hearts.  Then comes the other fire revelation in this passage of Scripture.  Jesus is going to separate the wheat from the chaff.  The wheat will be protected by Christ, but the chaff will be burned by the never-ending fire.  We don't talk much about "chaff" anymore.  It is the scaly outside part of the grain.  It must be discarded or burned if the "wheat" is to flourish.  If we allow Him, Jesus will eliminate all the chaff in our life and allow us to grow in Him.  The danger in this process is obvious.  If we try to remove the chaff ourselves or ignore it, the wheat will certainly be harmed.  Let's listen to Luke today and do exactly what he says.  "Chaff Can Only Be Cleansed By Christ!"
