Zechariah 13:8-9

"Two-thirds of the people in the land will be cut off and die,” says the Lord.

“But one-third will be left in the land.
I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure.
I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold.
They will call on my name, and I will answer them.
I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”

In part three of our six-part devotion entitled, "Cleansing or Consuming Fire?" God is speaking directly to Zechariah and has both good and bad news.  First the bad news.  God says that two-thirds of the people will be cut off and die.  That is a stark reality.  The other thing we need to know about this two-thirds is that a majority of them proclaimed themselves as righteous and religious.  They quoted the law of Moses regularly.  In other words, they masqueraded as God's people.  As a pastor, I unfortunately see way too much of this kind of behavior.  I watch as people proclaim themselves "holy" on a daily basis.  They turn to social media posts and addictions, unhelathy meals and "fellowship" time filled with gossip and judgment, and acts of "service" to God which are nothing but self-serving.  God convicts my heart daily to share God's True Word with everyone.  Often, like in the times of Jesus, it falls on deaf ears.  Now, the good news.  One-third of the people will be brought through the fire by God and made pure.  Many people do not realize that precious metals are not very "precious" without fire.  Silver is refined and gold is purified.  It is the same with all of us that proclaim Jesus as our Savior.  Without God's refining fire, we are tarnished.  If we chose to ignore this fact, we will become more tarnished than we will ever know, inside and out.  The two-thirds that attempt to claim God as their focus and fortress, will be consumed by the fire, not cleansed.  We will watch as they are combusted, not consecrated.  Let's be part of the one-third.  I know it is not as popular as being a part of the majority.  "It is Also Not As Deadly!"
