James 3:5-6

In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.

And the tongue is a flame of fire.

It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body.

It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

In part four of our six-part devotion series entitled, "Cleansing or Consuming Fire?" James tells us about how a tiny spark can ignite a great forest fire.  God has recently reminded me again that our tongues can praise Him or condemn others.  Once the spark ignites our tongue, we seem unable to control it or stop the wickedness.  Once again, James reminds us that it only takes a spark.  What does he mean by this?  As we all know, the world throws wrenches into God's work and plans.  What we do with these trials defines our character.  The spark on our tongue that makes us believe we must condemn and defend must be stopped before it gets started.  James tells us that if we don't do this, our entire body becomes corrupt.  Pride, jealousy, envy, and anger can be the sparks that ignite the forest fire.  Almost always, the anger in the Bible was not righteous, but all the Jews that displayed it used God as the justification for it!  They were simply deceived and God ultimately proved that to them.  The problem is that by the time God showed them this fact, it was too late for them.  We often justify this kind of behavior by claiming that we really didn't say anything.  We blame those around us.  I had a religion professor in college that always said that some people in gossip groups are simply listening too loud!  It took me awhile to discern what he was saying, but I finally got it.  God says we are not even supposed to listen to this kind of talk.  If we focus on true and sincere praise and fellowship, we will not fall prey to Satan's folly.  In the end, God has just one message for us regarding this wicked wildfire.  "Control Our Tongues!"
