Isaiah 14:12-15

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, t
o the lowest depths of the Pit.

Sometimes as Christians, we are unwilling to discuss God's truth when it makes us uncomfortable.  The subject of today's Scripture is such a perfect example of a topic we Christians do not want to talk about, out loud!!  Isaiah talks to us about the fall of Lucifer.  Who is Lucifer?  He is none other than Satan.  Lucifer was one of God's highest angels.  As an angel, his original Latin name "Lucifer," means "Light-bearer."  Lucifer's Hebrew name, helel, means "bright one."  Our Scripture lesson today asks the rhetorical question of how Lucifer fell from heaven.  In case you are not sure what happened here, let me explain.  Lucifer was created to make music for God as an angel.  Lucifer had a very important place in heaven.  Lucifer then decided that he would mutiny!  He led other angels against God and attempted to put himself above all, including God.  Isaiah details the boasts of Lucifer, as Isaiah quotes him. Lucifer believes he will ascend to heaven and be the one that sits on the throne of God.  He believes he will be "like the most high."  Isaiah finishes by explaining that how the story really ends, is with God banishing Lucifer to Sheol (hell) and the lowest depths of the pit of hell.  Lucifer becomes know as Satan, which literally means "adversary."  About now, we should be asking, "How can this happen to one of God's chosen angels?"  It is simpler than you think, and can happen to us mere mortals in the blink of an eye!  God has created us in His image.  God has a purpose for all of us and gives us talents and spiritual gifts to accomplish His will when we say, "Yes Lord!"  We can do amazing things in the name of God.  If you have been serving the Lord for any length of time, you know what I just said is completely true.  I must testify that the things God has done through me in ministry, are truly amazing.  I, like Daniel, need to tell everyone that it is God doing these things, not me.  I am simply not capable or worthy.  If you are "Lucifer," that is not the approach or attitude that you take.  One becomes misguided and begins to think that we are better or equal to God, and the trouble begins!   Like Lucifer, we lead other people down that path of death and destruction.   Every chance we get, we glorify ourselves, not God.  Big mistake!  Eventually, God "throws us out" of heaven and we end up in Sheol.  Blaspheme always ends up the same way.  We become separated from God's love, which is in turn our "power."  Without the love of God, we are tragically and clearly evil, so the "pit of hell" is where we belong.  How could a loving God let us get like this?  It is God's love that ALLOWS us to be separated from Him.  The answer to the magic question of how we get separated from God is that WE CHOOSE IT, just like Lucifer.  So, be careful in your daily walk.  Don't begin to think you know more than God.  You don't!!!  There is a reason why there is only ONE unforgivable sin, and that it is blaspheme.  Disobedience falls into that category.  Listen to God.  He's speaking today.  God is the answer.  He's your only way.  If we go the way of Lucifer, the results will be the same.  Unlike Lucifer, we can repent and turn back.  Don't "vacation" in Sheol.  It is way too hot there and you might find yourself as a permanent resident!
