Mark 8:31-32

Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things

And be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law.

He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.

As he talked about this openly with his disciples,

Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.

This is the first installment of a two-part devotion entitled, "Point of View!"  Jesus has come before His disciples to explain His death to them.  Obviously, they will not understand.  Jesus tells all of them that He must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, teachers, and leading priests.  He then lays the bombshell on all of them that He will be killed.  If that is not bad enough, Jesus tells the disciples that He will rise from the dead three days later.  Can we imagine what must have been going through the minds of the disciples?  Most of these men were simple folk.  This had to have been a huge shock to each of them.  As we know, they were terribly confused.  One would think that Peter's interruption would be exactly what the disciples needed.  This was not the case.  Peter actually took Jesus aside and reprimanded Him for saying any of this.  Jesus was always truthful.  Sometimes Jesus was blunt.  He was always loving and kind, but factual.  He didn't leave out the "big words" when it came to explaining the truth to God's people.  We will see in the second part of this devotion what Jesus says to Peter about this reprimand.  Until then, let's learn from our Scripture.  "When Jesus Talks, We Should Listen!"
