Philippians 1:27-30

Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven,

Conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ.

Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you,

I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose,

Fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies.

This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed,

But that you are going to be saved, even by God himself.

For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ

But also the privilege of suffering for him.

We are in this struggle together.

You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it.

As we continue with part two of our devotion, we discover why we have to be together in one spirit and one purpose as Christians.  Our unity serves as a sign to all our enemies that they are going to be destroyed.  Yes, that is exactly what our Scripture says!  At the same time, Paul tells us that we are going to be saved by God, Himself!  How can this be?  We are to trust in Christ and also suffer with Christ.  Paul encourages us that we all struggle together for the common good and lets the Philippians know that he is still struggling.  I am hoping that you are taking a minute to let all of this sink in, as you marvel at the Good News of Jesus Christ.  We have the promise of salvation through Christ's resurrection.  That, in itself, is extremely encouraging.  The fact that our enemies, that we are instructed to pray for daily, also know that they are going to be destroyed is all the satisfaction that any of us need.  For this reason, we never need to act in a revengeful way or try to "get even" with anyone.  A friend and ministry colleague taught me a lesson in the 1980's that has never left me and served me well.  I leave the retribution to God, because He is so much better at it!  We are not supposed to judge and we are not in charge of punishment.  There is a reason.  God has all the tools and knowledge to be the most effective disciplinarian that we could ever imagine.  Just read the last part of our Scripture today.  God has the power, and uses it, to let our enemies know of their demise.  How amazing is that?!  So, meet and fellowship in the temple daily.  Be of one mind and purpose.  Live like citizens in heaven.  Stand together for the Good News of Jesus Christ.  Yes, we will struggle together, but in the end, "We Know Who Wins!"
