1 John 2:26-28

I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray.

But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you,

So you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true.

For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie.

So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ so that when he returns,

You will be full of courage and not shrink back from him in shame.

As we continue exploring the Holy Spirit this week in preparation for Pentecost, today's Scripture lesson brings insight as to why God thought this aspect of the Holy Trinity was so important.  John warns us about being led astray.  As I have mentioned before, virtually every book in the Bible has some kind of warning against false prophets for us.  We are so easily persuaded by false teachings and rarely do we even challenge them.  I have been in so many worship services where the designated preacher, that day, simply conveys the wrong message to the congregation.  I am not able to judge their motives nor am I supposed to do that.  Generally the problem is the fact that many of us simply do not "live in the Spirit," so there is no true conversation with the "Living Triune God."  What we must do is know enough about Scripture to discern that the prophecy we are hearing is indeed false.  We are then called to correct any misconceptions that might impede anyone's salvation experience or understanding of the Scripture.  How do we do this?  John tells us that we use the Holy Spirit that lives within us.  John boldly says that the Holy Spirit will teach us everything we need to know.  What the Holy Spirit teaches us is never a lie.  So, if the Holy Spirit speaks the truth, and man speaks falsely, then we MUST correct this problem quickly.  John finishes by telling us that we must stay in constant fellowship with Jesus.  If we stay close to Christ, we will be full of courage and not be ashamed in anyway to face Christ upon His return!  I want to be part of this fellowship.  We all should.  What is our job today?  Be in fellowship with God and all His people that are in our lives today.  Listen to the Holy Spirit as He speaks to us.  Recognize false prophets and be warned of their influence on our lives.  Look up into the heavens today and say, "Breath on Me Breath of God!"
