Acts 2:43-47

A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.  And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.

They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper,

And shared their meals with great joy and generosity,

All the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people.

And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

As we complete our six-part series devoted to the Holy Spirit and Acts 2, The Bible allows us to look in on that First Church of Acts and see how they are doing, after being filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.  I must confess that as a minister, I refer to Acts 2 often.  Our five verses of Scripture today are really all that we need to know.  Please note that those who have heard all of Peter's message are now in awe of everything they have seen.  Part of the definition of the word "awe" has to do with a healthy fear.  In our ministry, I have literally gotten to the place that I am "afraid" to not be obedient to God.  I am not afraid that He will "wipe me out" if I do something wrong!  That is not the God we serve.  I am in "awe" of His mighty power and seek daily to conform my life to His will.  Look what happens when we all do that.  Peter tells us what life was like for those Pentecostal Christians.  All believers met together and shared everything they had.  Be careful.  This is not a step back for us to the days of communism that was forced on the masses by an ungodly government.  Instead, this was a voluntary act that God's people chose for the benefit of every individual.  They willingly sold their possessions to benefit the communal church.  While they were doing these acts of obedience and kindness, they met in the temple to worship daily.  They shared meals together, including the Lord's Supper, expressing great joy and generosity to each other.  Finally, they enjoyed praising God and embracing the goodwill that was present among all of their Christian brothers.  Act 2 closes with a verse that every church should read at every worship service.  Because God's people did all of these things and were obedient, God added precious souls to that First Church of Acts, daily.  Yes, I said daily!  So, if this is what was going on in the church that God and Jesus ordained, what happened?  Does your church operate this way today?  The answer for most congregations is a resounding "NO!"  We have stopped being of one mind.  We have stopped the healthy practice of fearing God because of our flagrant disobedience to God, the Alpha and Omega.  We have stopped sharing.  We certainly have stopped fellowshipping in the temple daily.  Why are we surprised that most churches are declining?  God will only add to our numbers when we do what Peter's church did.  I have promised the people in our ministry that we will be the "Second Church of Acts."  I encourage you to do the same.  What's missing from most of our churches?  The answer is simple, but tragic.  The Holy Spirit is missing.  We only talk about the Holy Spirit.  We do not allow ourselves to be indwelled by the Holy Spirit.  If we did, we would make very different decisions than most churches make, and we would be in far less peril daily!  So, today please say to God, "Come Holy Spirit."  Call on the name of Jesus.  Be indwelled by the Holy Spirit and let it be your guide.  Then, the greatest thing will happen to all of us and we will fully understand the saying, "The More, The Merrier!!!"
