Galatians 5:1-4

So Christ has truly set us free.

Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.

 Listen!

I, Paul, tell you this: If you are counting on circumcision to make you right with God,

Then Christ will be of no benefit to you.

I’ll say it again.

If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised,

You must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses.

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law,

You have been cut off from Christ!

You have fallen away from God’s grace.

In part two of our four-part devotion series entitled, "Freedom Isn't Free!" we are once again listening to the wise words of Paul.  To all of us that are legalists, yesterday and today, the law is not enough!  Paul is not advocating that we should ignore the law.  Actually, Paul states that we must obey every regulation of the whole law of Moses.  That is a very tall order in itself!  Paul tells the Galatians that our freedom is not dependent on obeying the law, but rather accepting Christ.  If the law is all we obey, we have cut ourselves off from Christ.  If we cut ourselves off from Christ, we have fallen from God's grace.  By now, you probably don't have good things to say about Paul, or me, for bringing this subject up at all.  I stand by the Scripture and Paul's words.  Legalism was very prevalent following the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.  Because the chief priests and the Pharisees could not explain Jesus, they chose to ignore Him.  Legalism gave them an out and still made them look "Biblical!"  Much like the fact that we should never take one verse of the Bible out of context, we should never operate our theology without both the Old and New Testaments.  We must embrace our Biblical heritage and Jesus.  We must listen to the law, the prophets and Christ.  "Only Then Will We Be Truly Free!"
