Galatians 5:13-14

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters.

But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature.

Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

For the whole law can be summed up in this one command:

“Love your neighbor as yourself.”

In part three of our four-part devotion series entitled, "Freedom Isn't Free!" God speaks, through Paul, to the Galatians.  Paul once again defines freedom as we all should know it.  First of all, Paul tells us that we have been called to live in freedom.  In Christ, we are free.  As we approach Memorial Day, let's use this statement to evaluate our governmental problems.  Do our government officials declare they are free in Christ?  Do our lawmakers consult God before any vote or decisions are made?  Does the Supreme Court turn to the Bible before rendering an opinion?  Does the Executive Branch of our government seek God's face in every cabinet meeting?  Please don't laugh or dismiss these questions.  This is exactly what our founding fathers did before every governmental decision.  President Martin Van Buren once missed the State of the Union address because he was preaching a revival where God had saved over thirty people, and he simply was not going to leave until God was done!  We joke about this in religious circles, but I lobby this is exactly why our country is no longer enjoying true freedom.  We are using this very same freedom to satisfy our sinful natures.  I have a political suggestion that comes from Jesus and this pastor.  Let's begin every meeting in government with a true prayer (not a politically correct one), and finish that prayer with, "God, help us to love one another like we love ourselves!"  I lobby that might change EVERYTHING we do in government, and would make us accountable to the brave men and women who defend this country in all branches of the military.  It might make a lot of our first responders believe that we really do appreciate what they do, as they are forced to see people at their worst each and every day.  What we are doing now in government obviously doesn't work.  Let's re-visit what was declared and constituted by our forefathers.  "We Have Been Called to Live in Freedom!"
