Matthew 24:36-37

But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

For as long as I can remember in my life, there has been one central question that constantly surfaces in Christian circles.  Even those that are not Christians give their opinions.  Bible Scholars and pastors everywhere give projections and write numerous books and publications on this subject.  How wonderful if this preoccupation was about preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ to a world that is so spiritually starved, we literally would never run out of potential salvation opportunities.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  When will Jesus come back?  WE DON'T KNOW!  There are several areas in the Bible that address our "not knowing," but this passage in Matthew is my favorite.  Why?  Jesus speaks these words Himself.  No messenger.  No angel.  No Prophet.  No stars or thunder.  How much more plain could it be?  No one knows the day or hour of His return.  The angels don't know.  Only God the Father knows.  That is enough for me and I thank Jesus that He was so direct and forthright.  Jesus did not stop there.  For all those that might say "You are probably not telling us because it really isn't going to happen," Jesus provides a "Noah" comparison.  As sure as Noah and the flood happened, Jesus is coming back.  We recently did a wonderful production of a Christian musical entitled "Children of Eden."  Act 2 includes the generations of Noah, the flood, and all of the trials of Noah's family.  While the dialog is obviously Bible-based, but not exactly literal, we do see Noah questioning God about whether he should really build the ark and when this flood thing is going to occur.  God says something we should all take to heart.  His booming voice proclaims in a somewhat frustrated way, "Finish the ark, and see what you will see!"  So to paraphrase, work until the day Jesus comes back and then see what you will see.  Verse 37 assures us that Christ is going to return.  WE JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN!  For now, let's preach and teach Jesus everyday as He has instructed.  Let's run to Him and make Him our focus and fortress.  Let's help Jesus write as many names in the Book of Life as we can before He comes back to get us.  Don't spend anymore time guessing or projecting because WE DON'T KNOW!
