Revelation 2:4-5a

Yet I hold this against you:  You have forsaken your first love.

Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did first.

One thing that history proves to us each day is that we repeat our mistakes.  It is a lovely, comforting phrase to remind ourselves to "learn from the past".  Unfortunately, history once again shows us that this rarely is the case.  The church at Ephesus had the same problem.  Paul had planted this church and they had many great strides.  Revelation tells us that they had no tolerance for the wicked, they worked hard, they had many great deeds, and had great perseverance.  The church constantly tested for false prophets and drove them out. Then there is the statement above.  What does it mean for them and for us?  We Christians often do things in the name of Christ and forget to include Him!  Christianity has its root and root word in Christ. Revelation is reminding us to get back to what worked.  Make Christ the center of your life, your family, and your church.  In many ways, I am sorry that the phrase "What would Jesus do?" has become so commercial.  Many people ignore it now since it is on many tee shirts, bumper stickers, bracelets, and coffee mugs.  Nevertheless, what Revelation is asking us to do everyday is just this...before we do anything we must ask "What would Jesus do?".  The church at Ephesus needed to be reminded and so do we.  Let's listen to this voice and prevent history from repeating itself again!
