Galatians 7-10

New Living Translation

You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth?

It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom.

This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!

I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings.

God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you.

Paul is writing to the Galatians and commending them for the race they "were running" so well.  What happened?  The world happened!  The heretics of Paul's day were hard at work.  Their deceiving, derailing teaching was "Legalism" (Legalism was a utilitarian political philosophy that did not address higher questions like the nature and purpose of life , derived primarily in China).  It could have been a whole host of things.  Paul tells the Galatians that their distraction and lack of focus is not from God who provided their freedom to be true Christians.  I used the New Living translation this morning because we don't readily understand the terms leaven and leaveneth from the King James in 2012.  Here we see the analogy to yeast where the Galatians allowed a little and got a lot!  Paul instructs the Galatians that his trust is in the Lord who will keep them from the false teachings, distractions, and get them back to running the race well.  I often find myself in the middle of the "heretics" of my world who are promoting "legalism".  I admit to the fact that I often can become distracted and derailed by them.  This passage of scripture needs to remind me that this false teaching and derailment is not from God who has given me the freedom to preach, study, and teach the Gospel message.  My challenge and yours is to trust the Lord to keep us from believing these false teachings.   We must keep our focus on the Scriptures and on the teachings of God and Jesus.  We must not let our current, worldly version of "Legalism" creep into our everyday lives.  This is why speaking the WHOLE truth is so important.  One must realize that in our modern day world a majority of lies come in the form of "unspoken" truths.  The Bible tells us that not speaking the truth (i.e. not saying anything in order to keep the peace or avoid conflict) is the same as speaking a lie.  When we allow this to happen once, we get a little yeast in our dough which eventually pollutes the entire batch.    Our race for God effectively comes to a hault in the mire of the world.  Finally, allow God to judge those that deceive you because He will and He is much better at it than we are!!  Afterall, He is God.  Most importantly, run the race well and don't be Derailed!
