Psalm 118:21-23

I thank you for answering my prayer and giving me victory!

The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord's doing, and it is wonderful to see.

Today we begin a six-part devotion series entitled, "The Chief Cornerstone."  One would think that this series would begin in the New Testament.  After all, we are talking about Jesus Christ!  The wonder of the Bible, as a canon, is that it all fits together perfectly.  Our Scripture today finds David thanking God for listening to his prayer.  David needed someone to turn to after all of the sin.  David needed someone to guide him as a king and military leader.  The foretelling of the coming of Jesus occurs right here in Psalm 118 and is quoted in three of the four gospels in the New Testament.  Like David, we all need a true cornerstone.  In modern times, we don't talk about this type of construction much, but in Biblical times, the building would fall down without a cornerstone.  It was the most important part of any construction project besides the foundation, which we will deal with next week!  Does that seem backwards?  It shouldn't, if we all read the Bible carefully.  In the Old Testament, first there was God.  Then we built altars, arks, and temples.  In the New Testament, first there was Jesus.  Then there was Jesus's declaration that He would build His church upon Peter, the rock, and the gates of hell would never prevail against it.  As we begin our spiritual journey together this week, let's first explore our chief cornerstone.  When our lives seem to be chaotic and non-productive, stop and check your "construction" techniques.  We need to truly evaluate our lives and determine if Christ if our chief cornerstone.  My educated guess is that most of us have work to do in this area.  Before it is too late and your entire "building" falls down, shore it up with the only stabilizing force that will never fail.  "Make Sure Christ is Your Chief Cornerstone!"
