Isaiah 28:15-17

You boast, “We have struck a bargain to cheat death and have made a deal to dodge the grave.
The coming destruction can never touch us, for we have built a strong refuge made of lies and deception.”

Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
“Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone.
It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on.
Whoever believes need never be shaken.
I will test you with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.
Since your refuge is made of lies, a hailstorm will knock it down.
Since it is made of deception, a flood will sweep it away.

In part two of our six-part devotion series entitled, "The Chief Cornerstone," we turn to the prophet Isaiah.  The people of Jerusalem have made a "covenant of death" by foolishly thinking that a pro-Assyrian alliance will protect them when Samaria falls.  In contrast to their covenant, God promises to place a "foundation stone" in Zion.  Those that believe in Him will always find a sure foundation.  To those that do not believe, this Chief Cornerstone will become a stumbling stone.  Isaiah shares a very important truth with all of us.  It is not whether you build or not.  The people of Jerusalem were building.  The problem was that they were not building with the measuring line of justice and the plumb line of righteousness.  Any of us that have done any construction projects know how important this fact is.  We recently constructed a stage platform in our new worship arts theater.  We spent a great deal of time measuring and making sure that all of the platforms were exactly square.  When we built the first one, it would have been easy to take short cuts.  After all, doing it the way we did took much more time than just "eye-balling" it!  We were rewarded when we put all twelve platforms together.  They formed a perfect 31' x 12' platform.  We used God's plumb line from the beginning.  Listen to Isaiah as he describes the alternative.  If we build our refuge on lies and deception, any hailstorm or flood will knock it down.  I am fairly sure that we have all experienced the constant "hailstorms and floods" that threaten to shake our Christian foundations.  As long as all our refuges are built using the Chief Cornerstone, we will be safe from harm.  Don't become confused with this point.  We will still hear the hail hitting our roof.  We will still see the wind blow the trees.  We will often see the waters rise around us.  The difference is that Christ will keep us safe from ultimate destruction.  Before we think about building anything, let's check our materials list.  Chief Cornerstone...check!   Measuring line of justice...check!  Plumb line of righteousness...check!   Lies and deception...rejected!!!
